You May Have Been Socially Distancing With Your Spouse for Seven Months If
Extra Credit for Me, the Winner
This is all I have to say this week! The national news and current events of the past four days have reduced my brain to a tangled pile of overcooked spaghetti. Let’s all put this week away and try again next week. Bye!
If you like reading Extra Credit, would you consider sharing it somewhere, or with someone? Parenting can be hard and isolating even in non-pandemic times, and lately…..well, you know. It helps to connect!
Ask A Teacher
My son is in fifth grade, doing in-person school so far, and thriving. A week ago, he was the last kid standing in what was basically a geography bee in his social studies class, and his teacher said he would bring him a doughnut as a prize.
For my kid, doughnuts are more valuable than just about any other material on earth, so he was naturally very happy about this prize. The doughnut has yet to materialize, and he’s miffed about it. He mentioned it to me before school this morning.
On the surface, a doughnut is a small thing. But if a teacher tells a student he’ll do something, what’s his obligation to follow through?
Kind of a relief to answer a question about doughnuts this week! Plus, a letter-writer’s teacher husband doing something that I found truly odd (but that my fellow columnist did not!), Zoom classroom management, and four-year-old mask refusal.
Recommendations
I have been dying to read something very pleasant and very escapist. I’m talking ENTIRELY transported. So I went back to Deanna Raybourn, who reliably delivered that experience with her Veronica Speedwell series, and picked up her first Victorian romantic mystery series: the Lady Julia Grey books. Satisfying mysteries, lavish descriptions of gowns and parlors and well-laid tables, romantic tension and banter between a plucky heroine and a gruff, mysterious hero. Like with the Veronica Speedwell series, you could easily skip the first book, which is not as good as the rest.
